NEWLANDS - The Only Place To LOWER The Rates!

At the 2010 Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday 30th June the NPPA reduced its financial membership fee from $5 to $1.  The reason?  We are financially okay - we practice restraint in our spending - we don't need to put up the rates to our community.

Oh!  The irony!

The NPPA was established in 1919 by concerned local residents.  Over the years the organisation has advocated, battled, cajoled, and made a bloody nuisance of themselves for the sole purpose of the betterment of its community - with whomever it needed to.

Our vision is "a dynamic, progressive, self-contained suburb".

The organisation prides itself on values of leadership, tenacity, integrity, and no fear. Organisations that have been supported by the NPPA include the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade, Nga Hau e Wha o Papararangi, Newlands Community House, Newlands Toy Library, Grenada Village Residents' Association, Newlands Plunket, Newlands Tennis Club, Churton Park Residents' Association, Newlands Indoor Bowling Club, Woodridge Planters, and numerous others.

All residents are automatically members of the organisation, and are more than welcome to attend any meeting of the group, or contact members of the Executive at any time.  Recently the NPPA has been working with the Johnsonville Progressive Association on shared issues in and around Johnsonville.

Civil Defence Currently there is no organised Civil Defence coverage for the Newlands/Paparangi/Grenada Village/Woodridge area.  We have written to Fred Mercoy, head of the Wellington Emergency Management Office, and asked him to provide the NPPA with a report on progress for Civil Defence in the Newlands area.  Trish Mahoney is responsible for this project.

Newsletter A written communication that will be sent to all 4,000 households in the NPPA's area at least quarterly.  We are currently collecting articles for publication, to be distributed at the end of July.  Tracy Hurst-Porter is responsible for this.

10-Year Plan The committee has approved budget to undertake a survey of all residents in the Newlands / Paparangi / Woodridge / Bellevue areas, with a view to developing a new 10-year plan.  Further details will be in the next issue of the NPPA News, the survey proper will be undertaken in late September/early October.  Jarrod Coburn is responsible for this project.

IAP2 Meeting Four members of the committee attended the July meeting of the International Association of Public Participation.  Jarrod Coburn will be reporting back on that meeting.

Annual General Meeting The NPPA's Annual General Meeting was held on 30 June 2010.  Minutes of the meeting will be available shortly.

Past Issues

Community Centre First Birthday Celebration  The weekend was a resounding success. The NPPA’s stall collected signatures for the petition and a number of email contacts for electronic copies of the newsletter and street audit documentation. Foodstuffs staff were rapt with the enthusiasm from the Community as they were outlining the proposed details of the new supermarket. Currently the council is receiving submissions on the supermarket. The NPPA has made a submission supporting the proposed New World supermarket.

Max Hetherington's Memorial Ray Good was responsible for this project, but has now left the committee.

Signage at the entrance to Newlands and Paparangi is old and requires replacing or upgrading, pending the outcome of our current research on the 10-year plan.  Christine Davies is responsible for this project.

Photocopy Billing for Churton Park Billing has been sorted out for producing the Churton Park Community Association's newsletters.  Michelle Rowe was responsible for this project, but has now left the committee.

Lawson Robinson's Seat This is a memorial park bench installed in Seaton Nossiter Park in memory of former NPPA committee member Lawson Robinson.  The seat is now in place, paid for paid ½ by Wellington City Council, ¼ by NPPA and ¼ by Grenada Village Community Association.  Michelle Rowe was responsible for this project, but has now left the committee.
